A visit was arranged for Primary students to Alexander Residential Care Home in Morley, Leeds. The visit took place on Wednesday 18 September 2024. The aim of the visit was to provide Primary students an insight into careers in the Health and Social care sector. Students were able to tour of the home, have a supported discussion with residents about what jobs they worked in and also with current staff members about what their jobs entailed. Students learned about careers such as: Care Home Manager, Chef & Care Assistants. They also learned that some of the jobs residents discussed, no longer exist.
Students learned about the role of Care Assistants in more detail as had a short talk with a care assistant.
Feedback taken from students included:
- 100% said they enjoyed the visit to the care home.
- 80% said they had learned about new jobs they had not thought about e.g. Care Assistant & Residential Care Home manager.
Comments from students included:
“Some people have to work at night to make sure all the older people are ok.”
“Working in care is hard but nice when we help people.”
The visit left an impression on students, as well as them learning about new careers.
The Stephen Longfellow Academy will continue to work with Alexander Care to support its careers programme and have work experience placements planned for Year 10 students in June 2025.
