The Stephen Longfellow Academy Careers and P.E. department worked in partnership with the British Army to link the subject of P.E. to careers and promote positive post 16 pathways. The Army outreach team were invited into the academy deliver an Army Elite Skills Day on 20 January 2025.
Both Key Stage 3 and Key stage 4 students were involved in the day, which included presentations about Army Careers followed by a range of practical activities. The careers presentations were very informative, students were able to ask questions about different Army jobs and about living in the Army. Furthermore, students gained a taste of Army teamwork and problem solving through a wide range of fun, hands on and confidence building activities that would develop students mental and physical attributes. The activities included the car task, map puzzle and the archery dodgeball activity.
Teacher feedback was positive about the event.

It offered a comprehensive overview of the diverse career opportunities available, showcasing roles beyond combat, such as engineering, healthcare, logistics, and IT. The speakers were engaging, sharing personal experiences that highlighted the values of discipline, teamwork, and service. The session also effectively addressed common misconceptions, emphasizing the rewarding and multifaceted nature of an Army career. Overall, it left attendees motivated and better informed, fostering a deeper appreciation for the Army’s contributions and opportunities”.

Overall, the event was a success. The Stephen Longfellow Academy will continue to work with the British Army to link school subjects to real-world careers and to promote the British Army as a viable post 16 and Post 18 option. The event had a real impact on some students. The Stephen Longfellow Academy are following up this event with the Army by taking ten interested students to visit The Army Foundation College in Harrogate for a site experience and has been planned for April 2025.
