The Stephen Longfellow Academy worked in partnership with First Bus to inspire its Primary students about careers in transport and linking curriculum learning to careers.
Primary students participated in a careers workshop and tour at the Hunslet Bus depot. Students were able to tour the site and were exposed to a range of careers from bus drivers, engineers working on repairs, body and spray painters preparing buses as well as learning how a bus depot functions. Students were able to ask a range of questions about careers and what happens at a bus depot.
Students were then invited onto the new EVIE (electric vehicle) bus to listen to an inspiring story about using public transport and reducing their carbon footprint.
Students had the opportunity to sit in the bus drivers chair and experience what it’s like in the cabin. All students were given a goodie bag to take away with a story book and soft toy of the EVIE bus to remember their experience.

“I have to commend all the students, they listened so well, they asked relevant questions and were genuinely engaged. Some of the students may consider becoming bus drivers in the future. When I was reading, I barely heard a sound from any of them, they followed my instructions getting in and out of the drivers cab and every one of them said thank you at the end. I’m sure Mubs would agree that we would happily welcome back another group of students if they all behaved that way. They represented TSLA incredibly well.”
