The Stephen Longfellow Academy invited employees and apprentices from Harrison Spinks to speak to students in Key Stage 3 (KS3) and Key Stage 4 (KS4) about their business.
Students were informed that Harrison Spinks is a Mattress manufacturing business that offers a wide range of careers from weaving, electrical engineering to hospitaility. Students were made aware that they have a local manufcaturing site in Beeston and several farms. Students in KS3 were informed of Harrison Spink’s green and sustainable approach and job roles, shown through several videos showcasing different jobs. The focus for KS4 included the wide range of apprenticeships avaiable and how to gain employment. Some of their slides can be seen below.
Luke the apprentice, shared what type of skills, character and qualifcations are needed to land a role with Harrison Spinks and how important school references are. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions about the business and roles.
Feedback showed the assembly was well received. Most students said they had learned about a new business and new jobs. Student commments inclued:
“Didn’t know the mattresses are made near me” Year 8 Student
“They have a lot apprenticeships.” Year 11 Student
The Careers department have a visit planned in the new year to see the Manufacturing site for interested students.
