Building on the recent Engineering assemblies within the academy, Students in Year 10 were then given the fantastic opportunity to visit the South Leeds Sulzer Site. The visit took place on 29 April 2025.
The main aim was to inspire students about Engineering and STEM Careers. Students also learned about a local employer and learned about the apprenticeships offered by Sulzer. Students were able to see a real working engineering environment first hand.
Students who attended were given a brief health and safety induction on arrival and Engineering roles were discussed. Students were then given the correct Personal Protective Equipment to enter the main building.
Students were then exposed to the different roles in Sulzer from different types of engineering including milling, fabricating, welding, pump testing, design, maintenance, and much more.
Students were also able to speak to different employees at Sulzer and apprentices to help them understand what working at Sulzer is like. Students were given the opportunity to ask any questions to the apprentices about how they became an apprentice and about their job role.
Feedback taken from all students showed they were positive about the visit and 80% of students said they would consider a career within Sulzer or within the engineering sector. Two students said they would consider careers within Fabrication and Welding. 50% of students said they had learned about new careers within the engineering sector.
