The Careers Team at Stephen Longfellow Academy recently collaborated with Vallely Tankers to arrange an exciting and informative site visit for Year 9 and 10 students interested in pursuing careers in Engineering and Manufacturing.
Vallely Tankers is a leading high performance tanker designer and manufacturer, offering a wide range of career opportunities across its large-scale manufacturing facility in Hunslet. Prior to the visit, students took part in a school briefing to prepare them for the experience and were provided with the appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE). Upon arrival at the factory, students received a comprehensive health and safety induction before beginning their tour of the site.
During the visit, students gained valuable insight into the manufacturing process and observed a variety of specialist roles in action, including laser cutting, fabrication, welding, and spray painting. They were able to follow the complete journey of a tanker, from initial design concepts through to the finished product.
The experience also gave students the opportunity to speak directly with Vallely staff members about their roles, responsibilities, and career pathways within the industry. The visit provided a highly engaging and inspiring insight into the diverse opportunities available within the sector.
Staff at Vallely Tankers effectively linked their work to key school subjects, highlighting the importance of science and mathematics and demonstrating how these subjects are applied throughout the tanker manufacturing process.

75% of students said they would consider a career in the Engineering or Manufacturing sector post 16.
Due to the exceptional behaviour of students on the visit, Vallely Tankers have offered two Year 10 students work experience placements across June 2026.
The Stephen Longfellow Academy will continue to work in partnership with Vallely Tankers to support the careers programme and raise students aspirations.
