Students at The Stephen Longfellow Academy were given the opportunity to visit the RSPB site at St Aidens. The aim of the visit was to promote Eco & Animal related careers.
On arrival at the St Aidens site, RSPB staff member (Joanna Lee) explained her role and various roles in protecting birds and the environment. RSPB Staff also discussed the various skills they use day to day from dealing with the public, undertaking tours and specific protecting birds and habitat duties. They also discussed how the disused coal mine on site has now been made into a wildlife conservation area and the different species of animals and birds that now reside there. Students were able to see different species of birds in their natural habitats.
Students really enjoyed the visit and as a result of their positive behaviour, the RSPB has offered a student work experience opportunity at the site in June 2025.
Feedback from the students showed: 90% of students said they had learned about new careers with the RSPB.
100% said they had also learned about the importance of protecting birds and the environment.
100% of students would recommend the visit to other students.
