The Stephen Longfellow Academy continued to expose its students to new employers across the month of April. Sulzer Pumps and the Royal Air Force (RAF) were invited into the academy to raise awareness of public service and engineering careers. These two providers delivered a range of assemblies across Key Stage 3 and Key Stage 4 to inspire students.
Sulzer Pumps representative (Katie Alovisi – Early Careers Manager) spoke to students about the company, its values, routes into and the key criteria they look for in candidates. Sulzer is a very local company (less than 500m from the academy), who offer international careers within the pump design, manufacturing, testing and installation industry. Katie also brought along an apprentice (Lewis Joy), who shared his journey to becoming an apprentice and what his apprenticeship is like at Sulzer. Students were given the opportunity to ask Lewis questions.
The RAF assemblies were delivered by Sergeant Liam Kavanagh. Liam discussed how the RAF can change someone’s life for the better and offered amazing opportunities to participate in sports and see the world. He covered the wide range of careers and apprenticeships on offer. He also covered entry requirements and being part of the RAF family. Students were inspired by the assemblies and were able to ask questions. Interested students were also given an RAF leaflet to take away.
For students interested in engineering, there will be a visit to the Sulzer Pumps site in May and the RAF will attend the school careers fair. The Stephen Longfellow Academy will continue to work with Sulzer and the RAF to promote its careers offer.
