Dear Parent/ Carers

End of Term Newsletter

As we reach the end of our first academic year, I would like to take the opportunity to update you on the progress of our new site and the changes which will be taking place from the start of the new term in September 2018.  We are very excited at the prospect of moving into our new location in Phoenix House, which is situated in Millshaw Business Park, Beeston, close by to the White Rose Shopping Centre.

Work is progressing quickly at the site, and staff will be able to access the building on Monday 3 September to set up and unpack.  Our intention is that Primary pupils will have their first day on Thursday 6th September 2018.  The Academy will be fully open to secondary students (Y7-Y11) from September 10th 2018.

From September 2018, pupils will be able to travel to and from school using public transport.  As a result of this, The Stephen Longfellow Academy will no longer be providing free transport once it moves to its permanent site.

We would advise pupils to obtain a bus pass here: or in person at Leeds Bus Station.  Furthermore, we will be providing each pupil with an individual travel plan before the end of term.

All pupils will have already received free uniform when they transferred to The Stephen Longfellow Academy in the first instance. If you wish to purchase additional uniform, please complete the attached order form and return it with the correct payment by cash or by cheque made payable to ‘The Stephen Longfellow Academy.’  This can be handed in to the new Student Services area at Phoenix House.

Please be reminded that pupils will be refused access to school if they arrive in incorrect uniform, and will be asked to return home to rectify their attire before returning to school.

Invacuation / Lockdown Drills

As part of The Gorse Academies Trust Health and Safety Policy, all academies are introducing Invacuation and Lockdown procedures, in order to protect pupils and staff.

An invacuation would be used when there is an environmental risk to the Academy, for example, a chemical fire within the local vicinity.

Similarly, in the event of an intruder entering the school site and posing a threat to staff or students, an operational lockdown would be activated.

As a result of this, we will be performing drills of both Lockdown and Invacuation procedures before the end of this current term, and information regarding the policies will be published on the school website in due course.
