Stephen Longfellow Academy students were given the opportunity to visit the Sulzer engineering site in Leeds. Sulzer are global leaders in fluid and chemical processing applications. They design, manufacture, and test a range of pumps. The main aim of the visit was to provide students an engaging and inspirational site experience.
The visit was a follow on from a careers assembly around Engineering and Manufacturing held at the academy. The assembly was delivered by Sulzer Employee, Jay Fowler (Test Engineer), where he discussed his job and other careers at Sulzer. On 7 July, Students were given the opportunity to have tour of the Sulzer Site.
From the tour students gained knowledge of what happens at Sulzer and how close the site was to many of their homes. The class session held at Sulzer was also informative linking maths and science to the engineering sector.
Students witnessed manufacturing and engineering at a variety of levels from shop floor fabricators and welders to senior pump design and test engineers. Students were shocked to learn Sulzer had pumps which are worth more than 4 million pounds and used for water and oil movement. Students were even allowed to see the pump testing room.
Student feedback from the visit very positive as 80% of students said the visit has inspired them to be an Engineer and a 100% would recommend the visit to other students. Three Year 10 students stated they would be making an apprenticeship application direct to Sulzer, when they get to Year 11.
