September 2017-Present 

Through partnership with the Leeds College of Building ‘Skills Academy’, a number of our Year 10 and 11 students have been given the opportunity to study construction in a specialised setting over two days a week (Monday and Friday).

Students are offered a range of exciting theoretical and project-based learning activities including joinery, brick-laying, tiling, painting, decorating and plastering. Working within both a classroom and workshop setting, students gain both direct and transferrable skills for further training or employment. It is through their time studying on challenging practice pieces or larger construction tasks that students are guided and nurtured in their communication, project management, creativity, organisation and self-motivation skills. From creating tables to shelving units, flower beds to skirting boards, students are able to enjoy the rewards of constructing a product of their own from scratch. From power drills to tile cutters, students are introduced to a variety of high-tech machinery in the workshop setting and are supporting in using these effectively and independently. Whilst in the classroom, students study the legislative side of construction by grasping elements such as Health and Safety.
