As part of the Stephen Longfellow Academy careers programme, Leeds City college were invited to deliver assemblies to all students across Key stage 3 (KS3) and Key stage 4 (KS4). The aim was to introduce the college to KS3 students and to ensure that KS4 students had a greater awareness of Leeds City College as a realistic post 16 option choice.

Students in KS3 were provided with an introduction to the college, explaining the main campuses and their locations across the Leeds area and an explanation of the options available. The KS4 assembly offered detailed information about courses, as well open day information. There was a ‘How to Apply’ section and the interview process was also discussed. All students were given an insight into the differences between the Vocational, A Level, T Level and Apprenticeships offered by the college. Support and enrichment opportunities at the college were also discussed.

Overall, feedback from teaching staff indicated the assemblies were “…well received by students” and “…outlined the key information students needed”. One member of staff suggested adding more visual photos of each campus and adding this to the Leeds map slide, this information has been passed on to Leeds City College for future assemblies. Student feedback was also positive with over 70% of students stating they would consider the college post 16. The work with Leeds City College will continue across the year, with planned visits to the Quarry Hill & Printworks campuses on the 24 November for students to experience a college environment and have a tour of the facilities.

Romy Beer from Leeds City College said, “I thought the overall engagement was great, all students watching paid close attention and listened well which created a very welcoming environment! They seemed eager to learn about their post-16 options which was great to see. I look forward to delivering more assemblies at TSLA.”

Comments from students included: “Think I will go there when I leave, the mechanics bit looked good” Year 8 Student. “The College is better than I thought, will apply there as well” Year 11 Student.

The Stephen Longfellow Academy will continue to work in partnership with Leeds City college to raise awareness of post 16 options and support the transition of its students.
