As part of the Stephen Longfellow Academy careers programme, Leeds City College were invited to deliver assemblies to all students across Key stage 3 (KS3) and Key stage 4 (KS4). The aim was to introduce the college to KS3 students and to ensure that KS4 students had a greater awareness of Leeds City College as a realistic post 16 option choice.
Students in KS3 were provided with an introduction to the college, explaining the main campuses and their locations across the Leeds area, and an explanation of the options available. The KS4 assembly offered detailed information about courses, as well as open day information. There was a ‘How to Apply’ section and the interview process was also discussed. All students were given an insight into the differences between the Vocational, A Level, T Level and Apprenticeships offered by the college. Support and enrichment opportunities at the college were also discussed. In both assemblies students were given the opportunity to ask questions about the college and have dialogue with the facilitator Claire Chubb.
Overall, feedback from teaching staff indicated that the assemblies were positive. Teaching Staff stated: “I didn’t know they offered T Levels as well” and “useful information exactly what students need to know for their next steps.”
Student feedback was also positive with 75% of students stating that they would consider the college post 16. The work with Leeds City College will continue across the year with planned visits to the Quarry Hill & Printworks campuses in November for students to experience a college environment and have a tour of the facilities.

“Thank you for inviting me into school for the KS3 & KS4 assemblies this week. It was lovely to have visited school and to have met such lovely staff and students alike.
I am sure that it was quite difficult for some of the students to sit still and listen to me speaking to them for the duration of the assemblies, but I found the students to be respectful and they listened well to what I was saying.
I am looking forward to seeing some of your Year 10 and 11 students on our campuses soon, when I will be delighted to show them around our facilities.
I must give a special mention to the lovely young man on the front row in Key Stage 3, who was particularly engaged and communicated well with me when I asked questions.

The Stephen Longfellow Academy will continue to work in partnership with Leeds City College to raise awareness of post 16 options and to support the transition of its students to post 16.
