At The Stephen Longfellow Academy, we take our role in safeguarding extremely seriously. Our staff will do everything they can to protect students from harm. Safeguarding is everyone’s responsibility, and all of our staff are trained to be alert and aware of the signs and indicators of abuse.

The view of students is of the utmost importance to us, and we will always listen to our students ’ wishes, thoughts, and feelings, and will always seek to identify and support their needs. Where possible, we will identify any difficulties or concerns early in order to act preventatively, because we believe in early help processes.

We will always provide support and advice to families and parents/carers, whilst acting in the best interest of our students at all times.

• Maintaining a secure site.
• Making sure all visitors are recorded and monitored.
• Ensuring that all staff and visitors understand safeguarding is their responsibility and that they report concerns immediately.
• Making sure that students are able are aware of risks, can keep themselves and others safe and know how to report abuse, including E-safety.
• Ensuring that all staff have received Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance.
• Providing regular training and briefing for all staff in child protection.
• Ensuring all staff and visitors know who our child protection officers are.
• Ensuring admission and attendance procedures are strong to prevent students missing education.
• Giving young people the skills and confidence to protect themselves and others.
• Giving students a safe place to voice their concerns and talk about sensitive issues.
• Ensuring all students have access to guidance and advice.
• Referring students to additional agency support as needed.
• Sharing information with agencies and services to make sure students and families have support and to prevent them from harm.
• Taking immediate action and contacting the appropriate agencies when we believe that a child in in danger or at risk of harm.

At the Morley Academy we take Harmful and Abusive Behaviours very seriously and in response to national concerns around sexual abuse in educational settings we would like to sign post our community to a helpline commissioned by the Department For Education and run by the NSPCC.

The helpline provides both children and adults who have experienced sexual abuse in schools with support and advice. The helpline will also provide support to parents and professionals. Anyone who gets in touch through this dedicated helpline will also be signposted to other relevant support services available.
