This week has seen nominations and interviews take place for our 2019/20 student council. Both secondary and primary students have gone through student interviews after vesting their interest in representing the academy. The Council will be led by six students from Year 11, two from primary and include a Chair. They will oversee the following areas of operation:
- Student Welfare (anti bullying, transport, nutrition, pastoral support)
- Student Study (curriculum, trips and visits, academic support including financial support)
- Student Enrichment (extra-curricular activities including rewards)
- Student Family Support (involved in bridging any gulfs between families and the academy)
- Green Ambassador (eco school, recycling and community initiatives)
- Chair (responsible for designing agendas with the lead SLT member and conducting meetings)
Secondary students will also mentor a number of our primary students and further roles including sports leaders and eco representatives will be developed throughout the academic year.
Primary students also produced their own manifesto as to why they would make a good student councillor. Our primary students had this to say during their interviews:
What makes TSLA special?
- “The academy gives you more of a chance and you have a lot more people to talk to about your problems”
- “We get to do creative curriculum and lots more extra things which makes learning more fun”
- “Students get more help as the groups are smaller”
What must a good school councillor do?
- “A school councillor must be a role model and help others”
- “They must listen to opinions even if they do not agree”
- “Show respect to everyone and help their classmates”
How would you improve the school?
- “I would help my friend who struggles with maths, we could get more maths resources to help him. The secondary students may also struggle with maths too so they can get help too”
- “I would make sure that everybody gets to have an opinion and they are listened to like we do now with our questionnaires”
How are students recognised for doing positive things?
- “We receive weekly rewards and book vouchers if we do all of our work in the week”
- “I get enrichment time at the end of the day if I try my best all day”
- “We get to go on trips like GoApe and the safari park. We had a big inflatable brought into school last year”
Our student council will be decided this week with all successful councillors attending the first council meeting of the year after half term. The first council focus will be “rewarding positive behaviour” and “how we make sure everyone has the chance to enjoy reading”.
