Year 9
Students will be studying cell biology and atomic structure during this term. Cell biology will give an insight in to the microscopic world of our body, looking at plant and animal cells as well as disease causing bacteria. In the chemistry topic ‘atomic structure’ students will consider the fundamental building blocks of all materials on Earth. Both topics lend themselves to practical science activities where scholars will have the opportunity to use microscopes, Bunsen burners and more.
Year 10
Students will begin by studying the chemical changes topic. A very practical subject that will allow students to investigate the chemical changes used in industry. Students will learn how different substances have different properties and how we as scientists can make predictions about how chemicals will react. Students will then move on to study the particle model of matter and consider the density of different objects using practical techniques. This topic will require students to apply their mathematical understanding to help master this challenging concept.
Year 11
Students will be studying the organic chemistry module looking at how we extract and use crude oil. Crude oil is a massively valuable resource and this module will give students the opportunity to discover how it is made and what it is made from. Following on from this, students will be investigating waves. They will investigate how light and sound move through the air, how we sense them and why they act differently in different circumstances.
Tier 2
On tier 2, students have been learning about the physics involved in space travel. The students have been making water rockets using fizzy pop bottles. After designing them students have built them as aerodynamically as possible before launching them in the playground. Develop the learning experience further students have been engaging in a piece of creative writing about a journey in to space to try and encourage them to enjoy the writing process.
