Year 9
In the chemistry topic ‘atomic structure’ students will consider the fundamental building blocks of all materials on Earth. Both topics lend themselves to practical science activities where scholars will have the opportunity to use microscopes, Bunsen burners and more. Moving on from this, students have been learning about energy types and transfers. A mathematical topic that helps students to build a core understanding of a key theme from within the physics curriculum.
Year 10
Students began this half term by studying the infectious diseases topic. Learning about the different pathogens, the diseases they cause and how to prevent further infections. An important topic that considers how diseases can be spread, but more importantly, what we can do to remain healthy. As well as looking at external defences to disease students are able to learn about how the body and its army of white blood cells are primed ready to defeat infections. In practical sessions students will get the chance to observe the growth of some bacterial colonies on agar plates.
Year 11
Students will be studying the waves topic looking at how light and sound travel as transverse and longitudinal waves. Students will use wave machines, slinky springs, light boxes and signal generators to investigate the properties of light and sound waves. A very practical subject which will explain phenomena such as reflection, refraction, high pitch and low. Students will be expected to apply these knowledge points to different situations using past paper exam questions in preparation for mock and final GCSE exams.
