The impact of in-depth, regular Topical Talk discussions on children is profound and enduring. These discussions are instrumental in building essential thinking and communication skills, equipping children with the ability to engage with the world meaningfully, both in their future careers and as responsible citizens. In today’s educational landscape, however, finding the necessary space and resources to facilitate these discussions can pose a significant challenge. Nonetheless, given their undeniable value, Topical Talk remains an indispensable component of our personal development curriculum. At our institution, the primary objective of Topical Talk is to provide young people with frequent opportunities to engage in in-depth discussions about current events, thereby equipping them with the skills they need to thrive in a rapidly changing world. Topical Talk takes place during form time, affording students the opportunity to enhance their news literacy, develop their oracy, and participate in well-crafted discussions and debates. The topics chosen for these discussions reflect current events on a global scale, rather than being confined to the United Kingdom. We seek to explore issues across ethnic, cultural, and socioeconomic divides, offering students a broader perspective and deeper understanding of the wider world. Our Topical Talk curriculum is designed to offer a wide range of discussions that are both topical and relevant to our students, with a view to developing their knowledge, skills, and understanding of current affairs. As such, the topics covered are diverse, encompassing a range of global issues that challenge our students to think critically and engage in meaningful dialogue.
