Students have made a range of sweet and savoury dishes to develop their practical skills and allow them to demonstrate their understanding of safe and hygienic practices working with different pieces of equipment. Students have been completing AQA awards to achieve certificates to celebrate and reward their skills and progress in food.
Year 7
Year 7 students have been completing an AQA award to demonstrate their understanding of how to use kitchen equipment safely such as a kettle, microwave and toaster. Students have been demonstrating their skills in peeling and chopping vegetables to make a healthy stir fry. They have also used an electric hand mixer to prepare a creamed cake mix and turned on the oven to safely cook the cake.
Year 8
Year 8 students have developed their understanding of food poisoning and its causes. They have been developing their knowledge of the importance of working hygienically to avoid food poisoning and are aware of how to work with high risk foods identifying the dangers.
Year 9
Year 9 students have developed their skills using a pasta machine to make their own fresh pasta and making homemade puff pastry. They have planned a Christmas fayre to a set brief, creating suitable dishes to meet the client’s needs, investigating the benefits of freezing food and costing the price of the ingredients for the event.
