To support students at Stephen Longfellow Academy, learn more about sustainability, recycling and Green Careers, a bespoke careers visit was arranged to the Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility (LRERF). The visit took place on 26 October 2023. Prior to the visit students were given a presentation about Green Careers within the school.
Key stage 4 students were given the opportunity to tour the facility. Students were able to see directly into the waste areas and how the giant claw functions. Students then had a bespoke workshop on what happens on site, how energy is produced, sustainability, and took part in a hands-on recycling/sorting task. Students were also made aware of Green Careers and met key employees on site. Students were given the opportunity to ask questions directly to employees in the control room.
The visit was a success and feedback from students was positive as well as linking in with key aspects of the Geography curriculum. Students were also able to learn about the largest living wall in Europe, its environmental benefit and how it was put together.

100% of students said they enjoyed the visit to the Leeds Recycling and Energy Recovery Facility.
100% of students said would be more likely to recycle after today’s visit.
90% of students said the visit had inspired them to consider a Green Career in the future.
At the end of the visit, students were able to name several Green Careers which included: Ecologists, Solar Power Installers, Wind Turbine Technicians, Foresters, Recycling Engagement Officers, Environmental Engineers, and Refuse Collectors.

Overall, the visit was beneficial in supporting students to learn more about Green Careers and sustainability. The Stephen Longfellow Academy will continue to work with LRERF to inspire young people about Green Careers.
