Whole school sports day – Thursday 15th July

Following the wave of expectation that the Euro championships brought to the country and off of the back of exciting opportunities through Gorse Gets Healthy, the academy held our annual whole school sports day on Thursday 15th July. The day is a big one in the academy calendar and students were more excited than ever following the cancellation of last years event due to the pandemic. It was the first time this year that a whole school house event was able to be held, students made the most of the opportunity across a number of sporting disciplines with competition, enjoyment and team work the order of the day.
Primary kicked off proceedings with a number of Olympic events that included sprints, hurdles, relays, high jump, long jump, shot put and javelin. All students gave their all and supported one another through everything that the morning threw at them. After our last event, house Ben Nevis held a slender lead.
Our key stage 4 students were then passed the baton with a record number of students taking part. Speaking of records, TP (year 10) broke the year 10 rowing record with support from Keiran from The Gorse Boat Club. Students took part in a number of team and individual events including 2 of the Gorse “big 3”, rowing and volleyball, with Everest topping the volleyball scores and Snowdon dominating rowing. Andes were king of the basketball free-throw event with Everest also winning the tug of war. At the end of our key stage 4 events, Ben Nevis still had a narrow lead with all 4 houses still in contention to lift the trophy.
Key stage 3 rounded off proceedings in what was an exciting climax to a wonderful day. Mr Binnian was extremely impressed with the effort our year 7 and 8 students put into their events in what was the closest ever finish as students gave their all in a bid to win the house cup. Students took part in relays, throwing events and the tug of war, with the overall winner decided by the very last event of the day. After 5 hours of hard work and smiles, Everest were crowned the winners with a narrow margin splitting them from Ben Nevis, Snowdon and Andes.
Mr Binnian and the PE team would like to congratulate all staff and students for playing their part in a wonderful day. They would also like to pay particular praise to our year 10 BTEC sport students who were on hand to coach our primary students during the morning session.
Overall, the effort was exceptional, with all students rewarded with a fit bit to carry on the good work and hopefully reach their target steps each day.
